Felt Purse DIY for Children Learning to Sew

I am teaching Jill how to hand stitch this summer and I wanted to start off with a project that would be easy, fun, and have an end product that she could use.  I came up with the idea of this felt purse:

It's actually very simple.  I cut out a rectangle of blue felt fabric (which would be folded in half to form the purse.  And I cut out a small heart in contrasting pink fabric.  I used a roll of duct tape to hold the heart in place, and then drew dots along the edge of the heart to give her an idea of where to aim her stitches.

After this applique work we folded the fabric in half and once again I marked dots along the edge to help her space her stitches.  This time we did a very simple whip stitch up each side.  I helped her cut a strip of the pink felt that had been used on the heart applique, and we inserted it into the top corners of the purse to be sewn.  She had the idea to add buttons where she was sewing the handle on and I love them!
